Science communication is important in today's technologically advanced society. A good part of the adult community is not science savvy and lacks the background to make sense of rapidly changing technology. My blog attempts to help by publishing articles of general interest in an easy to read and understand format without using mathematics. You can contact me at ektalks@yahoo.co.uk

Talk 4: Memory, The Two Selves & Happiness: Perceptions of the Brain Why Our Perception of Reality is Almost Always Wrong?

Slides for previous talks may be viewed here:   Talk1   Talk 2   Talk3

In the following I publish the slides for the fourth meeting.  The session was given to a discussion of the memory - a store of our past experiences that we rely rather heavily in forming our perceptions of the environment around us.  A brief discussion of  Kahneman's idea of the experiencing and remembering selves is included.  Also included are the results of some surveys about how happy people feel leading to a discussion of illusory superiority bias.

UPDATE (26 March 2024):  University of Bristol has offered, since 2019 a course on 'The Science of Happiness'.  Their experience is interesting - students feel happier towards the end of the course, but most return back to the level of life satisfaction they experienced before the course - Regression to the Mean.
