Science communication is important in today's technologically advanced society. A good part of the adult community is not science savvy and lacks the background to make sense of rapidly changing technology. My blog attempts to help by publishing articles of general interest in an easy to read and understand format without using mathematics. You can contact me at ektalks@yahoo.co.uk

Medical Imaging - Ultrasound Imaging; On the nature of sound waves

Ultrasound is a safe imaging method as it uses sound waves which are non-ionising form of radiation.  The sound waves used are of much higher frequency than the range that human ears are sensitive to.
Variations of ultrasound like Doppler-shifted Ultrasound provide measurement of flow rates (movement) and Harmonic Ultrasound can discriminate between different tissue type effectively.

In the following I reproduce the slides of my talk at James Watt Auditorium, East Kilbride, Scotland in the year 2008:

Change in frequency of sound waves (hence the shift in pitch) is proportional to the speed of the object divided by the speed of sound.

Ultrasound imaging is a widely used medical diagnostic technique that employs high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of structures inside the body. A device called a transducer emits sound waves that travel through tissues and reflect back when they encounter boundaries between different types of tissues. Medical Image Processing Projects. These reflected waves, known as echoes, are processed by a computer to generate images of organs, blood vessels, muscles, and developing fetuses. Ultrasound is non-invasive, painless, and does not use ionizing radiation, making it a safe imaging method for many patients.

Sound waves are mechanical vibrations that travel through a medium such as air, water, or solid materials. Image Processing Projects For Final Year. They are produced when an object vibrates, causing nearby particles to oscillate and transfer energy from one location to another. Sound waves are longitudinal waves, meaning that the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of wave propagation. Their main characteristics include frequency, wavelength, amplitude, and speed, which determine how sound is perceived.
